The Altai in late September, in the fortnight when the birch and larch turn and the whole valley goes gold at once. Kanas lake with its morning mist, the Tuvan village of Hemu, and grassland that runs to the Kazakh border.

The timing is narrow and weather-dependent — that is the nature of an autumn colour trip. Some high-altitude days; expect cold mornings.
