yay !! the newest GFX camera is released !!!
The Fujifilm GFX 100 RF !!
To be honest, when I first heard about this camera, i was not really very excited about it. I have been using GFX cameras since the 1st GFX50s, and all the subsequent GFX cameras. I really enjoyed using them. But did not know wat to expect from the RF. No doubt, the camera will produce great photo quality, but not sure how it would fit into my usage, since I already have a GFX100 and also loving the GFX100II
Thanks to Fujifilm Singapore, I was given the opportunity to bring the camera to Nepal on a recent trip (conducting a workshop there) . And after thousands of images from the RF, I have to say I really love the camera :p
Let’s look at some basic specs of the camera
- 35mm f4 lens on the GFX 100 RF offers an angle of view comparable to 28 mm on full frame
- lens enables closeup shots from 20 centimetres away
- it has a built in four stop ND filter
- it allows the use of leaf shutter instead of a focal plane shutter
- a digital teleconverter lever at the front of the camera (the 35 mm focal length can be converted to 45 mm, 63 mm and 80 mm)
- aspect ratio dial ( love this as I like to shoot in the 65:24 format, and with the top dial , it is easy to switch)
- at 735 grams, it is the lightest in the GFX series
- A modified algorithm enables improved autofocus prediction and more accurate face and eye detection
- video is at 4k 30p
- supports Frame.io Camera to Cloud for direct file backup
- weather sealed camera
- available in Black or Silver ( I was using the Silver)
When I first saw the camera, I thought it looked really great. It feels good and definitely light at 735 grams. Here are some images of the camera. ( it comes with a nice rectangular hood and lens filter)

Following below are images taken in Nepal last week. The camera is small, inconspicuous and very quiet, it does not get much attention from people, making it a great camera for street photography.
As mentioned earlier, I have always loved the 65:24 aspect ratio. Started loving this aspect ratio many years ago when I was using the Fujifilm camera G617 ( 120 film, and still having it in my dry cabinet)
Was very happy when GFX has this aspect ratio as well, and have been using it. There is now a dial on the GFX 100 RF which makes it easier for user to switch to the different aspect ratio
Focus is fast and I can get really close to subjects without being too intrusive.

at 35 mm focal length ( 28 mm equivalent on full frame) it enables me to create images with more background story, since it is wider. I usually use my 23mm on a XH2 for Nepal street photos ( 35 mm full frame equivalent). So this focal length gives me a new perspective in Nepal ( I go there 2 times a year to conduct workshops)

I loved the fact that I can really get close to the people for photos
Nothing intimidating as the camera is small

And who is to say that that focal length is not good for portraits ?

GFX cameras has always been known to deliver great images with high dynamic range with very good details.
Now with the GFX100 RF.. it offers something different for GFX lovers. A fixed lens, rangefinder, large format camera.
The size and feel of the camera is really great. And even though it does not have IS, I dun feel handicapped. At that focal length, there is really no pressing need for IS.
The ND filter is a great addition. Especially when we have to capture slow shutter speed in bright daylight.
Now with the use of leaf shutter, we can finally use flash at high shutter speed. Although I did not experiment this in this trip, I would definitely want to try this out when I do portrait photography
The focusing of the camera is very good. There are times when I reacted instinctively to a scene in front of me, and once I point my camera to the direction, it was able to get a focus very fast.
You might ask, how does this camera compare with the GFX100II with a GF30mm lens ? Firstly, the price of the GFX 100 RF is definitely cheaper than a GFX100II+GF30mm lens. The size is also much smaller. So if you are a photographer who likes to use this focal length, the camera will definitely be the one for you.
Lastly , a comparision in size of the GFX 100 RF against the GFX100, GFX100s, GFX100sII ( all with the GF 110 mm lens)
