In general, travellers to Bhutan are advised to not give candy, gum, pens, balloons, money etc to children, who soon
learn to demand gifts. I thought this is pretty good.. cos Bhutan has got good education for the kids, and
the last we should do is to encourage this kind of negative culture there..
However, on the visit to one of the Dzong, we saw a group of foreigners (wif big video cameras, and DSLR)
getting a little monk to walk to and fro inside the Dzong (sort of to pose for the cameras) , and finally giving him some
money after that for his efforts..
I was disappointed by this group of foreigners. I am sure they would have been advised not to do
such acts.. But they did it just to get their shots. I think as travellers and photographers, we should learn to respect
the country that we are visiting. Such acts may work in certain countries, but not for some other places.
I would urge fellow travellers not to condone such activities when they visit Bhutan, and also learn to respect
other people’s culture..
